nGage is the Enterprise Social Computing System for the Microsoft SharePoint platform; today that’s only for MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Sever 2007). Tomorrow, on May 12th, Microsoft will formally launch Microsoft SharePoint 2010. Although a majority of organizations are expected to wait until at least 2011 to move to the new platform, there is going to be a critical mass of early adopters who want to leverage the good things that the 2010 version brings just as soon as possible.
But that’s only one of the reasons that OI Software is coming to market early with nGage Prime, its first 2010-specific offering. Paul Henry, OI’s CEO, says “Yes, it’s important for us that nGage Prime is seen as a strong SharePoint 2010 launch application. But it’s just as important that we’re demonstrating a commitment to a seamless upgrade path for the ‘MOSS majority’. You can buy nGage for MOSS now and, whether it’s sooner or later, when you do move to SharePoint 2010, you know that can you stick with nGage, that your data will be intact and that you’re not going to lose any momentum in your social computing strategy.”
So what exactly is nGage Prime? It is a system for executing on the first, critical phase of a Social Computing strategy - meaning it provides the tools required to drive, measure and celebrate the transformation of an organization into a secure social network of which everyone’s an active member.
nGage is all about harnessing the potential of people and social computing technologies to create massively more successful organisations.
There is a general concern that social computing tools used randomly in an organization will not generate material business value. And, if they ever do, it will be sporadic, unpredictable and unsustainable. Paul Henry seems to agree. He says “I don’t subscribe to the view that social computing technologies represent some kind of anarchic threat. But I do see it is a terrible waste to simply ‘empower’ people with social tools that they or may or may not use, when and how they like; it’s missing an enormous opportunity – an opportunity to improve performance, to cut costs, to innovate and to transform for competitive advantage.”
nGage all about creating a controlled explosion of social computing – one that delivers on the promise of Enterprise 2.0 to create more agile, more collaborative, more engaged organizations. It’s a system for managing and monitoring a phased roll-out of social computing technologies; it’s for driving their adoption and for aligning the way they are used to the real needs of the business; it’s about using these technologies to create a new medium that connects all corners of an organization with its leadership and their strategies.
nGage Prime will be launched formally during June 2010.
